Matthew Johnson's artistic journey has been diverse, if not distinctly modernist.

As a painter based in Melbourne, Johnson channels his varied travel and cultural encounters through the archetypal medium of oil and pigment. The foundational structures of his paintings exhibit repetition—utilizing grids, geometric patterns, stripes, or sequential arrangements inspired by nature. Having undertaken numerous residencies across Europe and Australia, Johnson's work is not only housed in various private and corporate collections nationally and internationally but also extends to the ongoing creation of site-specific architectural installations throughout Australia.
